The Bow Valley Rugby Club is hoping local female athletes will break the winter blues by trying out a new sport this spring and summer.

The Cochrane-based club is hosting their Women’s Icebreaker Event on Friday, March 10 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the indoor turf field at SLS Centre.

The “try rugby” clinic is free for any woman in Cochrane who is interested in playing rugby this season. All skill levels, especially anyone who has never played before, are welcome to join in on the fun.

Corinne Sato, the local rugby club's vice-president for women, touted the inclusive nature of rugby as a great reason to come try it out.

“Women of all shapes, sizes and athletic abilities are encourage to play, as there will always be a position available for you,” said Sato in a Bow Valley Rugby Club press release.

“What we’re trying to show people is that rugby just isn’t a sport. It’s about building a community and creating lasting friendships with like-minded people. I think we are one of the only sports that will socialize and hang out with the opposing team players after a game. We have a lot of social events and we encourage people to come and hang out with us before, during, and after practices and games.”

Emily Herron, a senior women's player with Bow Valley Rugby Club reiterated Sato's comments, adding she is also urging women to show up at the SLS Centre on March 10.

“We’re facing so much in our lives, that we often forget to look after ourselves," she said. “We get so caught up in benefiting our families, our careers, our ‘to do’ list, that we often forget to look after ourselves and have fun. After noticing myself sitting on the sidelines I realized that I was missing something in my life. Something just for me. Rugby is what was missing in my life."

To reiterate the fact that rugby is more than just a sport, the club will be holding a social after the icebreaker wraps up at the SLS Centre’s curling lounge.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring indoor running shoes and a water bottle. All other equipment will be provided.
