ATHLETE PROFILE

Chris Hugo

Cochrane Generals

AGE: 22

BEEN PLAYING HOCKEY FOR: 17 years (started when I was 4)

WHY HOCKEY? I don’t know why hockey, I started at such a young age it almost seems like it was just part of life. It’s awesome having a great group of guys working towards one common goal, seeing people sacrifice so much for a friend next to them.

FAVOURITE HOCKEY MEMORIES: I couldn’t pick one specifically, but going to tournaments when I was in tyke and novice. Something about getting off the ice and heading straight to the pool with your whole team always puts a smile on my face. On the ice I would have to say playing (Edmonton Oilers) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in bantam, watching him score 4 goals to beat us in westerns was extremely bitter sweet and of course every year with the generals was amazing they really are the best years of hockey

BEST CAREER RESULT: Novice first year we won the league championship. It was made more special because Lanny McDonald gave us a pregame speech. With the Generals my first year we went to the Division finals only to be swept by Okotoks.

HOCKEY PLAYER/ATHLETE YOU LOOK UP TO: I looked up to Flames forward Jarome Iginla growing up. He never took a shift off and in some ways I guess I tried to play like him and be a leader by on ice example.

WHAT’S NEXT? Now that I’m done with the Generals I think it’s time to coach. I have been coaching a foothills elite team over the past two seasons but I want to get to coaching older kids. I have talked to a few guys about coaching a team in Cochrane this next season.

FAVOURITE QUOTE: As much as I hate to say it, “Sweep or be Swept” – former Gens captain Tyson Soloski.
