The Cochrane High School Cobras varsity boys basketball team came away with silver Feb. 2 at the Super South 16 hoops tournament at Crescent Heights High School in Medicine Hat. The Cobras went undefeated in three preliminary games at the 16-team tourney to get to the final against Medicine Hat High School, losing 85-81 in overtime.

Prior to the final, the Cobras beat Kate Andrews High School 103-46 in the opener.

“Kyle Moortgat led the way with 11-for-17 shooting, including five three-pointers en route to a 28-point effort,” said Cobras head coach Kris Nielson. “He was also suffocating on defence.”

The Cobras then downed the host Crescent Heights Vikings 92-79. Chace Nielson led the way with a triple-double; 33 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. He was just three steals short of the rare quadruple-double.

In the semifinal, the Cobras downed McGrath 65-52.

“Jake Moulton led the team in scoring with 22 points,” said coach Nielson. “But it was Murray Perrault’s 14-point, six-rebound effort and Noah Bean’s six big rebounds off the bench that proved pivotal in that fourth quarter.”
