There are times in a football season when the word “smashmouth” applies.
Look for it Oct. 25 in Cochrane High School Cobras’ Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) division football final against George McDougall High School Mustangs.
Having reached the RVSA final with a workmanlike 36-6 semifinal win Oct. 18 over crosstown-rival Bow Valley Bobcats, the Cobras get another shot at a team they barely defeated (14-13) in the Sept. 13 season-opener – a smashmouth special if there ever was one.
“I would say so. They are a pretty talented team on the defensive side of the ball,” Cobras co-head-coach and offensive coordinator Rob McNab said. “It’s going to be tough to move the ball on them as we found out in the second half of the first game we played them. Just better preparation.
“We just have to go at it and play the game Saturday.”
The Cobras will be relying heavily on senior quarterback Cody Stevens, a classic pocket-passer whose read-and-react skills and rifle arm have earned him a spot with the University of Alberta Golden Bears next season in Edmonton. He’ll be up against George Mac’s three-headed monster, a linebacking trio anchored by seniors Quinn Yakiwchuk and Colton Church. The focal point of George Mac’s parsimonious defence, the Mustangs linebacking corps smashed Cochrane right in the mouth in the second half of the Sept. 13 regular-season opener.
Coach McNab has reviewed the film, including the Mustangs’ Cover 2 zone defence, and has a plan.
“This week, we’re home all week practising,” McNab said. “We’ll be better prepared.”
