Cobras' Mount scores for Grizz, eyes UBC rugby

That familiar blur on the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club ground was none other than Cochrane High School Cobras running back Justin Mount.

That familiar blur on the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club ground was none other than Cochrane High School Cobras running back Justin Mount.

The Class of ’14 grad, who played for coach Ty Hawes on Corina Bauer’s combined Bow Valley/Cochrane High School boy’s rugby team, played his first men’s rugby game May 30 for Bow Valley Grizzlies against Irish. Hawes also coaches the Grizzlies.

Mount scored two tries subbing for Grizzlies starters in a 74-0 Calgary Rugby Union Division 3 men’s whitewash of the Irish. Known for his exploits on the Cobras gridiron, Mount has migrated to the rugby pitch. When the Bow Valley/Cochrane boy’s rugby team was eliminated from the high-school season with a 32-0 loss May 28 to Holy Trinity in Okotoks, Mount packed his kit and followed Hawes to the Grizzlies. His two-score night in his first competitive men’s game will look good on his resume as he attends University of British Columbia in the fall, with an eye to giving rugby a go while studying forestry at the West Coast school.

“It was fun. It was good,” Mount said of his Div. 3 men’s debut. The ball is already rolling in his effort to play rugby at UBC, which is aware of his interest. “Hopefully that turns into something. Definitely. For sure.”
