Count Cochrane Cobras senior girls basketball head coach Randy Peron as one of the most excited guys in the gym as basketball bounces its way into high schools next week.

He’s looking forward to preparing his team for a defence of its Rocky View Schools Association banner, a title the Cobras have claimed two years running.

He spent the off-season coaching his Red Jacket club team in Calgary and “golfing my face off,” while finding time to research some new schemes for the Cobras senior girls.

When the Cochrane Eagle caught up to him in the Cobradome, he was introducing them to a Los Angeles Clippers practice regimen he researched in the off-season.

“It suits us really well,” he said of the National Basketball Association team’s warmup techniques. “I’m very excited for the season. I’ve got a new offence I’m running and new inbounds and sideout plays.”

As for his expectations for the season, he’s just asking for an honest contribution on the court. The rest will take care of itself.

“We have a theme this year; hard work will define us, words will not. We’re going to stick to that. We are going to work as hard as we can and let our actions speak louder than words.”

Part of those actions include taking his players and families to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary to take part in the Feed the Hungry campaign Dec. 1. The Cobras varsity girls season begins Dec. 4 against the Phoenix at Springbank Community High School, 7:45 p.m. tipoff.
