With a 61-0 exhibition win over the Chestermere Cowboys Oct. 25, the Cochrane High School Cobras are itching to play the Olds Spartans to kick off defence of their 2012 provincial Tier 3 high school football title.

The winner of the regional playdown advances to the provincial Tier 3 playoffs beginning early next month. Cochrane and Olds get it on Nov. 2 at Calgary’s Shouldice Park, 1 p.m. kickoff

The Cobras eviscerated their hosts in a tuneup under the Friday night lights at Chestermere’s Utley Field, opening up the playbook and the bench in the lopsided victory. Quarterback Cody Stevens was on the money in the first half, hitting receiver Kyle Moortgat three times in a row for touchdowns on the same fade route to the front corner of the endzone.

“They were in single coverage,” said Cobras line coach Jim Forrest. “I’m not sure what they were thinking. All our kids played well. Our junior-varsity players went in in the second half.”

Now it’s on to games that count, but the Cobras haven’t played Olds this year.

“We have a couple films on them,” Forrest said of Cochrane’s knowledge of the Spartans. “They’re a big, strong group of kids. They’re going to be a challenge, more of a challenge than we’ve had in the last little while.”

Other than a September exhibition loss to a San Diego school, the Cobras have been unbeatable, going 5-0 in Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA)play this season, out-scoring opponents by a combined 231-7 score.

The Springbank High School Phoenix won RVSA Tier 2 football silver, losing 22-0 to Airdrie’s George McDougall Mustangs in the Oct. 26 final, ending Springbank’s season.

In Tier 4 action, the Bow Valley High School Bobcats blanked Airdrie’s Burt Church Chargers 16-0 in Oct. 26 exhibition play and tackle High River’s Highwood High School in a Nov. 1 playoff at Shouldice Park, 6 p.m. kickoff.
