Right back at it.

Cochrane’s high school basketball players have barely had a chance to shake off their holiday turkey hangovers before hitting the hardwood for our town’s biggest hoops tourney of the season.

The seventh-annual Cochrane Classic high school basketball tournament bounces its way into local gyms the morning of Jan. 9.

Taking place at Cochrane High, Bow Valley High, St. Timothy and Mitford schools, 31 teams are dribbling, passing and shooting for tournament bragging rights. Schools from Red Deer, Leduc, and Canmore, just to name a few, will make up the draw in four separate brackets – varsity girls, varsity boys, junior-varsity girls and junior-varsity boys. The tourney has added seven teams this year, up from 24. The senior boy’s division came up at seven teams, so that bracket has been split into a three-team and a four-team division.

The tournament opens 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, with Cochrane Cobras teams playing all their Friday games at their home gym and Bow Valley Bobcats teams playing all day Friday at their gym. The addition of another local school, St. Timothy, adds to the local flavour as the Thunder’s varsity and junior-varsity girl’s teams are entered for the first time and will be playing Friday games in their home gym.

Playoffs go Saturday, Jan. 10.
