Cochrane sports year in review: April

A look back at some of the Cochrane Eagle's sports coverage from April:

Cochrane players helped the Zone 2 U16AA ringette team achieve a first for the association: a national championship, which they won in Calgary on April 9 by beating a team from New Brunswick in the gold-medal final.
  • The Cochrane Generals’ 2021-22 season ended with a silver medal at the 2022 Alberta junior B provincial championships, following a 6-0 shutout in the gold-medal final to the St. John Huskies – an invted team from B.C. – on April 3. Cochrane otherwise went unbeaten in their other four games, which included a semi-final win over their HJHL counterpart, the Okotoks Bisons.
  • The U13 Tier 1 Cochrane Rockies hockey team rocked their way to a provincial title on April 3, beating the Drayton Valley Stars in overtime of their championship game.
  • Cochrane players helped the Zone 2 U16AA ringette team achieve a first for the association: a national championship, which they won in Calgary on April 9 by beating a team from New Brunswick in the gold-medal final. Zone 2 went unbeaten throughout the tournament.
  • Cochrane Curling Club team Subasthika Thangadurai and Ky Macaulay curled their way to a U21 mixed-doubles provincial championship, beating a team from Airdrie in the final. 
  • The Cochrane Basketball League hosted a successful three-on-three basketball tournament at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre on April 17. Seventeen teams from Cochrane, Canmore, Calgary, and the surrounding region came to compete for trophies, cash prizes, and bragging rights in the tournament’s U20 and open categories.
  • Athletes from Cochrane and surrounding areas brought home 72 medals from the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games in Edmonton from April 7 to 11. Approximately 150 athletes from the Big Country association, which Cochrane is included in, competed.
  • The Bow Valley Grizzlies began their 2022 outdoor rugby season with a hard-fought practice on April 25, in preparation for their first slate of competitive matches. This year, the Grizzlies expanded their club by offering co-ed divisions for U5, U7, and U9 athletes, as well as adult recreational co-ed teams.
  • The high-school boys’ soccer season kicked off on April 28, with the Cochrane Cobras and Bow Valley Bobcats both losing their season-openers in the Rocky View Sports Association.
