Cochrane sports year in review: March

The Bow Valley Bobcats basketball team made it to the South Central Zones 3A tournament in 2022.
  • The Cochrane Chaos’ dominant 2021-22 season came to a close following a Game 2 loss in their best-of-three Southern Division final playoff series against the Lethbridge Eagles on March 6.
  • The Cochrane Generals won the HJHL North Division after beating the Red Deer Vipers 4-1 in the best-of-seven series. The Gens clinched the division on home ice in front of hundreds of fans March 10.
  • Cochrane-based Team Muise rallied for an 8-7 triumph on March 13 over Sexsmith’s Team Powell to claim the 2022 Alberta Mixed Curling Championships in Black Diamond.
  • The Cochrane Curling Club hosted 49 teams at the Alberta Super Seniors bonspiel in mid-March. Local rinks took home 11 of the tournament’s top spots.
  • The Bow Valley Bobcats senior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both suffered early defeats at the South Central Zones tournament in Canmore. The boys’ and girls’ teams both went out of their respective competitions on March 9, bringing an end to their 2021-22 seasons.
  • The Cochrane Cobras senior boys’ basketball team took home its third-ever ASAA 3A provincial championship, after beating Mother Margaret Mary in the championship game, 74-64.
  • The Cochrane Generals’ hopes of winning an HJHL title came crashing down in their best-of-three series against the Okotoks Bisons, who swept the series to capture the Okotoks team’s first league title in eight years. However, the post-season continued for both teams, who went on to represent the HJHL in the ensuing provincial junior B championships.
  • The annual Cochrane Classic Hockey Game between students from Bow Valley and Cochrane high schools on March 23 raised $4,375 in support of the Cochrane Activettes’ food bank. 2022 marked the return of the annual game after a two-year COVID-caused hiatus.
