Cochrane wrestlers qualify for Canada Games

Cochrane Cowboys wrestler Callum McNeice has just thrown his hat into the ring at the Canada Summer Games.

McNeice has qualified for the Games following another strong showing on the mat, this time at a qualifying meet April 19-21 in Wetaskiwin.

The Grade 10 at St. Timothy High School will be grappling with Canada’s best Aug. 2-17 in Sherbrooke, Que.

“It was good,” McNeice said. “I ended up winning. It was pretty cool.”

As a 15-year-old in the 46-kilogram weight class, he’ll be wrestling competitors aged 15-17 in Sherbrooke. He finished fifth at nationals in Saskatoon earlier this month and won gold with at the Calgary High School wrestling championships in March.

“There’s going to be a lot of tough competition,” he said of Canada Summer Games. “But my goal is probably going to be top 4 or top 3.”

McNeice will be joined by Katie-Mae Stockley, a St. Timothy wrestler who qualified for the Games as an alternate.

“She’s competing with the best in the country,” said Cowboys coach Vern McNeice, Callum’s dad. “A super-tough kid. In the last couple of months, she’s really come into her own and competed very well.

“At nationals (April 7 in Saskatoon), she lost a very close match.”

The preparation for the Canada Summer Games will take Callum McNeice and Stockley to training locations in Canada and the U.S
