The Cochrane High School Cobras senior girl’s volleyball team stamped an exclamation point on their perfect season with a championship win on their home floor.
The Cobras (8-0 in league play including playoffs) defeated a high-skills but under-manned George Mac High School Mustangs squad 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 27-25, 25-16) in the Rocky View Sports Association gold-medal final on Nov 4.
The Cobras were in tough against the Mustangs, as the Airdrie-based school pounded away at the net on the strength of power-hitter Mik Sych. But the Cobras wouldn’t budge, as Ali Leskow teed off on Mustangs blockers with powerful strokes at the net. And Cochrane’s defence was up to the task as Rachel Solecki and Lauren Van Dyke’s net presence kept Mustangs digging out their blocks.
In senior boy’s final action, Cobras were taken to the limit by Springbank Phoenix, going the full five sets before grinding out a 17-15 score in the decider.
