Kids all over Canada are stick-handling around the driveway and garage wishing to one day have the game-winning puck on their stick, driving into the offensive zone and scoring, to send their team to the cup finals.

In the case of Cochrane defenceman Chandler Irvin and his Manitoba Junior A hockey club the Dauphin Kings, he did it for real and, oh boy, did it count.

Irvin secured the Kings a spot in the RBC Cup after scoring a one-time goal to complete the team’s 3-1 down comeback against the Spruce Grove Saints in Western Canada Cup action last weekend where they took away a 4-3 win.

“We came out a little flat, but really battled hard to come back,” said Irvin.

Early in the third period, the Saints scored to take a 3-1 lead.

“We knew we had to take some changes if we wanted to keep going and luckily I was able to help finish the comeback,” said Irvin.

“It’s good that we get to keep playing, and I believe we have a team that can compete and play to win at the RBC Cup (national championships),” said Irvin, formerly of the Drayton Valley Thunder, acquired in a trade last October.

The RBC Cup starts May 10 in Vernon B.C.
