The 2014 Rocky View Sports Association (RVSA) divisional golf championship will be a tournament the Cochrane High School Cobras golf team won’t soon forget. For the first time in the program’s history, the team took home the senior boy’s and senior girl’s banners in the same event, as Cobras won both titles at River Spirit Golf Club in Springbank on Sept. 17.

“It’s pretty awesome for our school to have that happen,” Grade 12 golfer Bria Jansen said. “I know the guys have been working really hard to try and get a banner of their own and to do it with our girl’s team is special.”

“Everyone pulled through in the clutch on the boy’s and the girl’s team and it was pretty exciting for all of us once we realized that we won both titles,” Grade 10 student Max Murchison said.

Murchison, who finished in second place in the individual standings with a round of 74, helped lead his team to a narrow victory, as it edged Springbank Community High School by one stroke (227 to 228) to win the school’s first senior boy’s banner.

“They take the five best scores to determine who wins and luckily our scores were good enough to win it in the end,” Murchison said. “All of us had a good day out on the course and while we all had our own struggles at times, we worked through it.”

“All of the guys played well and I think that was the difference between us and the other teams,” Cobras co-head coach Ben Janko added. “We only had one day of practice (on Sept. 15) because of the snow, but everyone improved from that day to the tournament day itself, which was awesome.”

Meanwhile, the girls cruised to their third straight RVSA title in as many years, with Jansen leading the way with an event best round of 69.

“This is my home course here, so I know it really well,” Jansen said. “I felt like I played a solid round and didn’t make any mistakes and my other teammates were also playing well all day here.”

“One of the things that made this year stand out was the fact that we had two new Grade 12 players on our team in Carly Charbonneau and Kenya Rasmussen,” Cobras co-head coach Sandy Green added. “Both of them got better as the round went on and they fit with our returning players.”

The Cobras’ double divisional title sets up the rest of the golf season, as Cobras take part in the South Central 3A and 4A championships at River Spirit Golf Club in Springbank on Sept. 23, and then host the provincials at River Spirit on Sept. 29 and 30.
