Grizzlies undefeated

After opening the Calgary Rugby Union (CRU) Division 3 men’s season with three-straight victories, the Bow Valley Grizzlies are looking forward to some home cooking.

To that end, the Grizzlies host Calgary Hornets in their first home match of the season 7 p.m., June 6, at Mitford Middle School field in Cochrane. Following Bow Valley’s 74-0 thumping of Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club on May 30 in Calgary, the Hornets may be somewhat wary challenging the Grizz on their lapidarian home ground.

“They’re looking good together,” Grizzlies head coach Ty Hawes said of his side. “Things are just rolling. The boys are just kind of building for that home opener.

“We’ll get her fired up there.”

If their May 30 win over Irish is any indication, the undefeated Grizzlies are the team to beat early in the CRU Div. 3 men’s season. They mauled Irish after schooling Airdrie Highlanders 53-14 on May 24.

Against Irish, they were untouchable, dominating all facets of the game from the front row out.

“Give me some players and we’ll get them going. It’s a testament to the senior guys. There are having a lot fun playing with these young guys,” Hawes said of his mix of players. “We can get up and the backs are running. We’re going on the front foot.”

James Kuehn, Kyle Colling, Steve Sawa, Lance Brown “Sockless” Dave Evans, Justin Mount and Ian Ames all scored for Bow Valley against Irish, with Evans kicking the converts.
