In wrestling, it’s called a “load cycle.”

It’s the gradual buildup of strength and technique to have a wrestler peaking for major regional, provincial and national tournaments. Cochrane Cowboys wrestlers have been loading up on medals as they’ve been on this load cycle.

Most recently, Cowboys wrestlers were winning hardware at an open high school meet at Calgary’s Sir Winston Churchill High School on Feb. 6-7.

Wrestling for their high schools rather than their club this past weekend, Cochrane’s grapplers continued to improve in preparation for their busy spring schedule that includes both club and high school tournaments.

Callum McNeice won gold for St. Timothy High School Thunder at the Churchill meet. In an epic, two-round final, McNeice was able to out-point his tough, host-school opponent.

Aidan McKeage won gold in his weight class wrestling for the combined Cochrane High/Bow Valley High team.

“These kids are just getting into the load cycle. They’re going to be going really hard now,” said Cowboys coach Vern McNeice, who attended the high school meet to monitor his wrestlers’ progress. He was joined by Cowboys co-coach James McKeage and St. Timothy Thunder wrestling coach Alex Green. “I’m happy where they are and now we’re going to go that next step and see where it goes.”

Cochrane/Bow Valley’s Brendan McKeage won gold, St. Timothy’s Charles Cook won bronze in his weight class and Bow Valley/Cochrane wrestler Carl Gildermeister took bronze.
