Will the real Cochrane Lions please stand up?

Following a strong Week 1 performance against the Wildcats, Cochrane Lions head coach Jud Graham wanted his players to eliminate the few mental errors that cost the team a 21-12 loss.

His defence appeared to take up the challenge, while the offence struggled with play execution amid a myriad of mental blunders in a 13-6 Calgary Area Midget Football Association (CAMFA) Week 2 loss to the Stamps April 12 at Calgary’s Shouldice Park.

Fumbles, dropped passes and missed assignments were more prevalent in Week 2 than in Week 1, which is a concern for the coach.

“The D actually defied expectations. We were really happy with the way defence played,” said Graham following the Stamps game. “I don’t know what was up with the offence today. The mental errors I talked about last week. They were there in spades.”

Cochrane’s lone touchdown came on a fumble recovery by defensive end Justin Sambu, who rumbled 25 yards into the endzone for a touchdown. But the offence just couldn’t get on track.

“The thing that I saw a lot of was we should have made the plays. There were dropped passes. People were running their routes, they were open,” Graham said. “But we dropped the passes. We worked on that this week so, maybe the thing is not to work on that.”

Safe to say the offence will get some more attention this week at practice.

“We’ll go back to the drawing board and work on it some more, and maybe try and establish more of a running game.”

The Lions tackle the Colts in CAMFA Week 3 play, 1:15 p.m. April 19 at Shouldice Park, Encana Field.
