Phoenix claim JV banner

The Springbank Community High School Phoenix junior-varsity (JV) boys volleyball team won the Rocky View Sports Association Division banner Nov.

The Springbank Community High School Phoenix junior-varsity (JV) boys volleyball team won the Rocky View Sports Association Division banner Nov. 6 with a 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13) win over the visiting George McDougall Mustangs of Airdrie.

It was the second time this season the Phoenix have needed five sets to edge George Mac.

And Springbank had to come from behind in the final set to take the banner.

“I think we were down. At the beginning we had some nerves definitely coming out and being in front of our fans and everything like that,” said Phoenix JV boys head coach Leah Schmalenberg. “They pulled it together like they always do. We trust them a lot as coaches.”

The Phoenix and Mustangs both advanced to the South Central Zone championship tournament Nov. 14-15 in Okotoks.

“We’re first in our pool, we’re seeded at No. 1,” said Schmalenberg. “So is George Mac. I’m expecting we’re going to meet up with them again in Zones for sure, in the finals. And I hope we do because they want a piece of us, for sure.”

In JV girls RVSA championship play, the Phoenix defeated Bow Valley High School Bobcats 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8) to take the division banner.
