After raising more than $200 for breast cancer last month, the Cochrane Generals got moving on their Movember madness to raise money for prostate cancer research this month.

The Heritage Junior Hockey League team’s ability to raise money for worthy medical causes is growing, literally.

This time on the faces of the players.

“We had our breast cancer game, we donated our 50-50 draw to that,” explained Generals general manager Jacqueline Hurlbert. “We figured that if we’re doing women’s cancer, we’ve got to do the same for men’s cancer as well.”

The team has set up a Movember website welcoming donations to aid in research for a cure to prostate cancer.

The Generals have already received $200 in pledges on their website and will donate the proceeds of the team’s 50-50 draw from the Dec. 7 game against Medicine Hat – rescheduled from the snowed-out Nov. 16 date.

“That means that the fellows should be looking pretty good by then,” the second-year GM speculated.

“I would like to beat our breast-cancer effort for 50-50, so I’d like to hit $300 for our 50-50 draw if we could.”

And she’s hoping, along with the 50-50 draw from the Dec. 7 game, that more donations will flow into the team’s web-based effort at moteam.co/cochrane generals, where photos of the players and the donations to date are listed.

The players have all taken the challenge on, with varying results. When you have players aged 16-21, you’re going to have different looks as the month, and growth, wears on.

“All of them are trying. You can just see where some guys can grow them better than others,” Hurlbert chuckled.

“Our 16- 17-year-olds aren’t filling in quite as quickly as the older players.”

Regardless, the team’s ability to grow its donations for laudable causes can’t be denied.
