The St. Timothy High School Thunder track teams are making plenty of noise this season. Members from both the senior and junior teams have advanced to city and provincial competition.

Eight of the school’s 11 senior track-and-field athletes have qualified for the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association’s city championships June 6 in Calgary.

Thunder athletes who qualified for city championships include: Zane Sparrow (javelin), Jocelyn Aab (high jump, long jump, triple jump), Kennedy Younger (400-, 800-, 1500-metre run), Jessica Brolsma (3,000-metre run), Seela Wulff (400m), Samantha Raybould (400m), Rebecca Netzband (triple jump), and Bryanne Labbe (high jump).

“For a small school, having a 73-per-cent success rate qualifying our athletes to the highly-competitive city championships is exceptional to say the least,” said St. Tim’s track coach Travis Cummings.

Not to be out-done, junior track athletes at St. Tim’s are headed to provincials June 22 in Edmonton. Qualifying athletes include Sophia Nowicki, Kylie deDeugd, Alejandro Mcfadden, Nathan Drennan, Connor McNeice, Alex Wall, David Weisgarber, Sam Norris, Eve Hebert, Chris Kauffman, and Thomas Mackenzie.

“Also of note on the junior-high front are the exploits of Sophia Nowicki, who has been tearing it up on the trails in the 5 Peaks trail-running series,” added Cummings. “A Grade 8 student, she was the fourth female overall and won her age group by minutes at the first 5 Peaks series race at Calgary Olympic Park on May 18. She has a very bright future in the sport of running.”

The St. Tim’s track team will also be running in events outside the school season.

“This year we will also have many athletes active in Footstock racing either the 5k, 10k, or triathlon,” Cummings said of the June 15-16 event.
