St. Timothy High School Thunder’s Aaneli Zemlak is making noise on the hardwood.

The varsity girl’s star point guard has earned a Shooting Stars scholarship for her basketball efforts and will apply it to her post-secondary education. She’s been selected for the award before, being coach Kevin MacLellan’s choice as the school’s candidate for the accolade since Grade 9.

“Your coach selects you to go for it,” Zemlak says at halftime of the Feb. 19 Thunder-Notre Dame junior-varsity girl’s basketball game, where she’s manning the scorer’s table. As to where she spends the $200 Shooting Stars scholarship remains up in the air.

“I’m still waiting to hear from my No. 1 school. I’ve been accepted by three others,” the 17-year-old relays. She’s been accepted at Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) schools Red Deer College and Lethbridge College. She’s also been green-lighted by Calgary’s Mount Royal University, which plays in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport, Canada West Universities Athletic Association.

But it’s Calgary’s Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Trojans she’s waiting to hear from. Trojans play in the ACAC.

“I’m hopefully getting a letter (from SAIT) within the next couple of days.”

Zemlak’s been bouncing with the Thunder since Grade 8.

“We’ve definitely been doing a lot better this year than we did last year. Our team is really good.”
