YELLOWKNIFE — Gov. Gen. Mary Simon arrived in Yellowknife today to begin an official visit to the Northwest Territories, a day ahead of a visit from Germany's president.

Simon and her husband Whit Fraser were greeted by Margaret Thom, commissioner of the Northwest Territories, and they discussed youth and education in the territory.

They also met with Premier Caroline Cochrane and signed the guest book at the territory's legislative assembly.

The governor general is expected to deliver remarks at an official reception this evening.

On Wednesday, Simon is scheduled to welcome President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Joint Task Force North headquarters and take part in a briefing with senior officials.

They will then head to the hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk to meet with Indigenous leaders and community members and learn about the impacts of climate change on the region.
