WHL roundup: Winterhawks start fast, whip Blazers 7-1

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Winterhawks scored four goals on 20 shots in the first period and then coasted to a convincing 7-1 Western Hockey League victory over the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Monday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

James Stefan scored twice for the powerful Winterhawks (26-10-2-1), who are second in the U.S. Division, two points behind the Everett Silvertips. Josh Davies, Gabe Klassen, Josh Zakreski, Ryan Miller and Diego Buttazzoni netted singles. Miller chipped in with three assists, while Luca Cagnoni and Marek Alscher each had a pair.

Ashton Ferster scored a third-period goal for the Blazers (9-27-3-2), who are last in the B.C. Division.

The Winterhawks, who led 4-0 after the first period and 5-0 heading into the third, outshot the Blazers 51-24 in the lone game on Monday's WHL schedule.

The Winterhawks went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Blazers were 0-for-4.
