And now, on to the next chapter

I’m surprised that this column is not that difficult to write since it’s my last one. Yep, this career is over and I’m embarking on a new one.

I’m surprised that this column is not that difficult to write since it’s my last one.

Yep, this career is over and I’m embarking on a new one.

If Winston Churchill can be elected prime minister of Britain for the second time when he was a month short of his 77th birthday, there’s no reason I can’t change careers at 77.

So I’m going to become a realtor and already it’s quite an experience.

I’m not there yet and have to study for an exam to get a licence and it’s all very interesting.

One requirement is a Grade 12 education, and not that I’m that old, but do you realize how difficult it is to fax stone tablets from Manitoba?

But we obtained those results and cleared that hurdle and I’m impressed how thorough real estate officials are before granting a licence.

And it’s all done to protect consumers.

I look forward to selling people on the advantages of living in Cochrane and that’s really not so different than the newspaper business.

We live in a great community and I love sharing it.

So that’s the future and the next chapter of life and I’m quite looking forward to it.

I have more enthusiasm about the future than I have regrets about leaving the past.

I’ve been blessed with a newspaper career that’s been anything but boring--well, most of the time-- and now it’s time to move on.

As you know we sold the mighty Cochrane Eagle last June and I was on a contract for a year.

That year is up so now there is a new publisher who happens to be my wife Brenda so the mighty Eagle is in good hands.

Perhaps better than the previous publisher.

Will things be different?

Of course.

What’s the point of making change if you don’t make changes.

So this is not so much a goodbye as a change of address.

And it’s as simple as that.

Besides, I’ve always wanted to be an All-Star.
