On May 25, Cochrane will be recognizing 32 very special individuals, businesses and community groups who contribute so much to our community.

I frequently hear residents’ concerns about Cochrane losing its small town feel and charm as the population of our town grows. I believe our “small-town feel” is not about population, but about the spirit of a community. The people who live in our town, how they connect and how they contribute to our community create the spirit and heart of Cochrane.

The Cochrane Community Awards are all about celebrating community connections, and it is those meaningful connections that make Cochrane such a special place to live. These awards are truly operated for and by the community: Community representatives manage all aspects of the event, community sponsors support each award category and local residents nominate their fellow community members to receive an award.

The event was established to celebrate all individuals, businesses and groups who contribute to Cochrane’s community. The focus of the event is on the honor of being nominated — we recognize and celebrate all the nominees for their outstanding contributions.

The 2014 Cochrane Community Awards takes place at the Cochrane RancheHouse May 25 from 2-4 p.m. This is the event where we celebrate our community and these very special individuals, businesses and community groups.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the 2014 Cochrane Trade Show. Once again, this year the event went well and attracted a lot of visitors. Thank you to all the wonderful local businesses and organizations and their staff and volunteers who showcased the many things Cochrane has to offer.

Every member of council, including Mayor Ivan Brooker, enjoyed the opportunity to spent time at the town council booth at the two-day show.

Here are some of the things residents shared with town council:

Clean up after pets – councillors heard a great deal about the importance of dog owners cleaning up after their pets at off-leash parks and other locations around town. Town peace officers are maintaining a high profile in parks and they do issue tickets (up to $600) for bylaw infractions. Please clean up after your pet. You can also help by politely asking other dog owners to do the same.

Speeding – keeping Cochrane roadways safe is on the minds of residents. Please obey traffic speed signs and reduce speed in school and playground zones. It’s especially important to drive carefully at this time of year when crews are out doing road work.

Traffic volume in town – our growing population is having an impact on traffic in town. The town is planning ahead for our future transportation and mobility needs with the Master Transportation Plan. The community will be able to participate in workshops being planned for later this summer and fall. Watch Municipal Matters, the town website and social media for invitations.

Traffic circles were suggested as a possible solution to traffic issues. The town assesses each situation for its unique needs and characteristics and develops solutions that fit best. Coffee with the Mayor – Thank you Bow Valley Credit Union for hosting this month’s coffee.

Coffee with the Mayor will take a break over the next few months and resumes this fall. Watch for an announcement in this space and Municipal Matters later in the summer.
