Beginnings and endings

We all love it when we get something for free, and the Eagle is doing its best to get you more stuff on the house.

The Eagle recently gave away a pair of tickets to last weekend's Cochrane Humane Society Saving Lives - Changing Lives Gala, a prize valued at $250.

Now, in partnership with Legacy Guitar and Coffee House, the Eagle is giving away another pair of tickets, this time to see The Wardens June 21 at Legacy.

Legacy has been bringing in amazing musical talent for some time now, and is working with the Eagle to give away a pair of tickets every month to one of its shows.

The next giveaway is planned for the July 5 Scotty Hills concert.

To win tickets to The Wardens, send in your best rock star picture of you with a guitar. These rock star portraits can be posted to the Eagle's Facebook page, on Twitter (with @CochraneEagle in the tweet) or emailed to [email protected].

These ticket giveaways are a great way to enjoy what's going on in your community and not have it hit the wallet too hard at all.

Eagle reporter Kathryn McMackin has moved on to the next chapter in her life, and whether she believes it or not, she will be missed…despite her atrocious language.

It would be hard to believe that anyone will miss her more than our local RCMP.

Never in the history of the Cochrane Eagle has any reporter been able to schmooze law enforcement quite like Kate.

When discussing the ‘mean streets of Cochrane' with the local RCMP bureau, Kate's dialogue dripped with mischievous humour, childlike interest, blunt honesty and sassy sarcasm.

Police officers (not all, but most) liked Kate. They may not have ‘fallen for her charm,' but no reporter had achieved such success when dealing with Cochrane's finest. One even bought her a gift while away on vacation…something no Eagle reporter has ever even come close to accomplishing.

Kate often said that her social style was to ‘kill people with kindness,' but there's something more, something underlying that goes unnoticed by most - even Kate - that makes her so good at dealing with people…honesty.

Any stand-up person respects honesty. There are those who are threatened by the truth and attempt to silence it, and this is precisely why the media exists.

You have to be good with people if you expect to be successful working for a newspaper - if you're on your high horse or are not pleasant to be around, you'll have a tough time in this business. This is true in most walks of life.

And if you are unwavering in your honesty, despite who you may upset, it won't take long before you are respected for that sincerity…even by those you have slighted.

This is what Kate accomplished during her time with the Eagle, and will surely continue to do so as she moves on to her next career.

Though she will now be on the communications/marketing side of the fence, nauseatingly attempting to get one side of the story out while blurring all others (what every good communications/marketing advisor does), she will no doubt be a success.

The Eagle wishes Kate good luck, thanks her for being a part of our team and hopes to see that red-hot personality around Cochrane every now and then.
