Cochrane mayor proud of council for moving forward on aquatic/curling centre project

This is an exciting time in Cochrane, as we have just started the final stages of design and the fundraising kickoff to our new aquatic and curling centre.

This is an exciting time in Cochrane, as we have just started the final stages of design and the fundraising kickoff to our new aquatic and curling centre.

It has taken many years to get to this point and I am extremely proud of this council for making the decision to move forward and undertake this amazing project.

We will continue to champion this facility, but we need your help. As a community, working together, we can make this a reality.

Please get involved, whether it’s a donation of money or your time at a fundraising event — it all matters and will help in our collective success.

Ivan Brooker, mayor

Street sweeping is now underway in Cochrane.

After a longer, colder winter with more snow than we’ve had in many years, there is much work to be done by town roads crews.

Here are some interesting facts about street sweeping in Cochrane:

How much more material was used this season compared to an average season? We used 2,600 tonnes of our standard sand/salt mixture this season, compared to an average year when we would put down about 1,800 tonnes of sand/salt mixture. When we use more material to keep roads safe in the winter, it means there’s a lot more to clean up in the spring.

How many hours of snow clearing took place in the 2013/2014-winter season compared to the average in previous years? Town crews devoted 35 per cent more hours than the average year previously. But it’s essential work that helps keep our town safe.

How long will it take to sweep Cochrane’s streets of debris? To clean the entire town of Cochrane takes approximately eight to 10 weeks, depending on the weather. The schedule assigns specific days for specific neighbourhoods so that all residential areas get cleaned. Main roads and the downtown area are cleaned throughout the season, usually at night when there’s less traffic.

How does weather affect cleanup? Sweeping is suspended in case of rain or snow showers. The equipment doesn’t operate properly when the material is wet, so crews watch the weather and respond accordingly. The street sweeping schedule resumes once the roads are dry.

How can I help with the cleanup? Your help is very important to the success of Cochrane’s street cleaning program. Please obey signs asking for vehicles to be removed from roads that are scheduled for sweeping; use your driveway, garage and parking pad instead. If you do not have enough off-street parking, you are allowed to park in the alleys on your scheduled street-sweeping day. Vehicles left on the roads during residential sweeping will not be towed, but, as a result, will not be cleaned and debris will be left behind. Please do your part and obey the no parking signs.

Check cochrane.ca/streetsweeping for the full schedule running April 23-May 14 and watch for daily updates on facebook.com/TownofCochrane and Twitter @TownofCochrane.
