Cochrane's home care services are second to none

Cochrane is a vibrant, working town. Considering that we only have 18,750 residents, we have all the amenities needed, yet still maintain a small-town atmosphere.

Cochrane is a vibrant, working town. Considering that we only have 18,750 residents, we have all the amenities needed, yet still maintain a small-town atmosphere. We have doctors, dentists, optometrists, churches, schools, shops, restaurants and, most important of all, a relatively new Urgent Care Centre.

This Cochrane Community Health Centre not only takes care of emergencies, but also houses a full diagnostic centre, mental health department, including grief support groups, and a much-needed headquarters for Cochrane Home Care.

As in most areas of Canada, Cochrane is entering an aging population era and home care has become a vital element in our society.

Most seniors prefer to remain in their homes as long as possible; to stay in familiar surroundings, be safe and independent. If home care is required, it all starts with a home care manager meeting with you to discuss your unique needs. Together you would create a plan designed especially for you. Family can also be involved if you wish. Your home care manager has access to all special care needs, such as a family physician, physiotherapists, pharmacists and health-care aides.

Home care is not only for the elderly. It also includes short-term injuries and physically disabled people of all ages. Home care can refer clients to access necessary medical supplies or assistive equipment, technology and rehabilitation to maximize function. They also offer palliative or end-of-life care. Anyone living in Alberta with a valid health care card can receive home care services, as long as their needs can be safely met at home.

In speaking to Don Stewart, media relations for Alberta Health Services (AHS), he assured me that AHS values privacy issues, therefore no interviews took place for this article. However, I can speak about the positive experiences my loved ones have had: home-care workers are very special and well-trained people. They cheer up their clients, laugh with them and are good listeners, giving them a better quality of life. They are truly angels walking among us.

Cochrane is located in the Calgary Zone for home care. The main number to call is 403-943-1920. Stella Robertson is the home care manager in Cochrane and can be reached at 403-932-6060.

If you require more information, you can go to the AHS website at albertahealthservices.ca or myhealth.alberta.ca.

We are indeed fortunate to have this service right here in town, so close to home. It’s just one more reason why Cochrane is such a great place to live.
