Council Column: Recreation is an important part of a complete community

The start of a new year is often the start of a new page.

Last year was a bumpy road and many of the projects that I was looking to advance were stalled. With the start of 2021, I am working to build momentum around my goal of ensuring that Cochrane is a complete community.

Recreation is an important part of that vision and COVID-19 has highlighted this in spades. Recreation is an important part of our physical and mental well-being. From parks to pathways, playing fields to ice, it is where we build community and strengthen our social bonds. The gap in our lives from missing out on our sports and recreation is growing more stressful.

With the importance of parks and recreation highlighted, I am excited to get back to work on these files. Questions about parks, pathways, and playing fields have been filling my inbox and adding to my Zoom time.

The Parks and Recreation Committee, that I have the pleasure of chairing, has new members appointed and the group is eager to get to work. On the workplan are the next steps in designing the Horse Creek Sport Park. The park is a key part in filling the need for more baseball diamonds, playing fields, biking and other recreational needs. The group will also be working through plans for Mitford Park and the Cochrane Ranche to ensure that these treasured spaces meet our needs.

There is challenging work ahead in filling these gaps, but I am looking forward to working with the community to make it happen.
