Councillor hears feedback on aquatic/curling centre

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my display table at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre earlier this month to talk about the aquatic centre and curling projects. I had a few boards on display showing detailed drawings of the new facility.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my display table at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre earlier this month to talk about the aquatic centre and curling projects. I had a few boards on display showing detailed drawings of the new facility.

The overall feedback I received was that residents were excited about the project. The top question from everyone was: How soon will the doors to this new facility be open?

Residents’ reaction to the facility’s concept drawings were extremely positive and very complimentary, in particular about the degree of effort and forethought put into the facility. I received a lot of kudos about the multi-use ability of the curling rink.

Did you miss this opportunity to find out about the facility and share your thoughts? The concept drawings and members of council will be available at the February session of Coffee with the Mayor (Feb. 27, 7 – 8 p.m., at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

Fundraising for aquatic centre and curling rink — Council recently approved a budget of $45 million for these projects, which will be built at the location of Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. The town cannot afford to fund all of the costs of these new facilities. The money will come from a combination of provincial grant dollars, other levels of government, fundraising and sponsorship. Talks are currently underway with a number of prospective key sponsors; a community fundraising initiative will be launched this spring.

New bridge — To accommodate projected increased traffic flow caused by population growth, a bridge is slated for construction that will span the Bow River near the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. Preliminary design work and legal surveys of the road plans will start this year. The town has been collecting offsite levies from all developments in town for this project. In the meantime, the town is moving forward with previously approved work to align Griffin Road to accommodate higher traffic volumes and get ready for the new bridge crossing.

Traffic light at Centre Avenue /Highway 1A — In January, the town was notified by Alberta Transportation that it would cost-share installation of a traffic light at this increasingly busy intersection. The town’s roads department has received approval from Alberta Transportation and the Town of Cochrane planning department on a traffic signal design. The plan is to install a temporary traffic light to be replaced by a permanent traffic light later on when the province eventually twins Highway 1A. Alberta Transportation has jurisdiction for Highway 1A.

Centre Avenue rail crossing landscaping — Watch for refinements to this crossing including top coat asphalt, permanent median, street printing, line painting and sidewalks on both sides of the crossing. The work will be carried out during this construction season.

Closed Fourth Avenue rail crossing – Later this spring, garden planters are to be placed at the location of the now closed rail crossing at Fourth Avenue to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
