Councillor's Column: Unprecedented times call for unprecedented kindness

This is one of the positive messages being shared by the Cochrane Social Recovery Task Force.

Coun. Susan Flowers.

This is one of the positive messages being shared by the Cochrane Social Recovery Task Force. We are all in this together and the task force members (people from local agencies as well as elected officials and front-line workers) all want to support the community as we work our way through this pandemic.

As a member of the Social Recovery Task Force I encourage you all to fill out the recent survey put out by the task force. Paper copies have been available in the last issues of The Cochrane Eagle and at Cochrane Family and Community Support Services, or you can fill it out on-line at letstalkcochrane.ca/SRTF.

The first survey was circulated in June of this year. The task force members were thrilled to receive 552 responses. We heard the struggles Cochrane residents were experiencing and saw the need for increased support around finances, isolation and much more. From the information gathered we shared information on community supports, encouraged local agencies to address concerns of residents and developed a speaker series to address the identified themes that emerged from the survey. The recordings of the presentations are still available to watch at letstalkcochrane.ca/SRTF.

It is very important that we hear from you. Please take 10 minutes to share your personal experience. The results will be used to help us understand how things have changed since the first survey was released and ensure that we are continuing to respond to meet the social needs of residents.

Cochrane has been a wonderful place to raise my children, develop my career and most recently serve on town council. I have focused on social programs that help the community to be as healthy as possible. We don’t always have the resources I wish we had to provide services but we can all take some responsibility for each other by showing kindness. Help out a neighbor, be patient in traffic, call a lonely senior and tell those who are important that you love them. We will get through this! There are so many things we can’t control but we can be kind.
