Special to the Cochrane Eagle

On February 19, Cremona 4-H Club members enjoyed a day at Olds College and bowling afterwards for the annual Fun Day.

We arrived at the beautiful 2,000 acre campus, and after watching a presentation on the programs and amenities Olds College has to offer we went on a tour of the grounds. From the meat shop to the mechanics shop, our guides gave us a fascinating overview of their courses, supplying interesting tidbits of information along the way.

For example, did you know that the students' hold farmer's markets to sell the produce grown in their greenhouses? The college itself has also been instructing students since 1913. Smart Farm technology, state-of-the-art farming equipment, is employed there. This gives a hands-on experience of this prospective new way of farm management. With friendly, knowledgeable staff and countless remarkable features, Olds College was certainly a pleasure to visit.

After that, we hopped on our bus for the short ride over to the Olds Bowling Alleys for lunch and a few hours of five-pin. After glow-bowling under the black light, more than a few strikes on the scoreboards, and yes, more snacks, we all had a great time.

Back on January 22, we hosted our Club Public Speaking event at Cremona Congregational Church. We heard a wide variety of fantastic speeches and presentations, from dirt biking to bees, bread making to guns, and lemons to super villains! Congratulations to all members for doing a fabulous job, and to Charlotte Keitel, Anabelle Ward, Willow Kabanuk, Aidan Kuechler, Iris Keitel, Austin Rohleder, Dusty Bennet, Frank Pike, Meaghan Heppner, Justin Noel, Liam Heppner, Keely Airth, and Dawson and Clay Grattidge for moving onto Area competitions!

Area competitions were held on February 22 at the Olds Air Cadets Hall, with four clubs from the surrounding area participating. As on our club competition day, all sorts of subjects were superbly presented and spoken on. Congratulations to Cremona members Keely Airth, Frank Pike, Liam Heppner, Iris Keitel, and Anabelle Ward for advancing to District Communications in March!

As well as polishing up our public speaking skills, Cremona 4-H-ers are continuing to prepare projects for Achievement Day, whether that be learning about chicken health, buying lambs, riding horses, welding, or seeing a cattle drive whilst on a beef farm tour.

Again, we thank everyone in the community for their support, and hope to see you at our Show and Sale on May 19 in Carstairs!
