Sports has certainly been a hot topic in Cochrane for the past few weeks – quite the feat considering the Cobras aren’t even on the gridiron at the moment.

The opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics happens this Friday (Feb. 7), and the Games have been a focus in Cochrane, particularly on our luge star, Tristan Walker.

Murray Cluff, a local ski coach, will also be in Sochi with his freestyle mogul skier from China.

Brad Spence, an alpine slalom skier from Bearspaw, is another competitor from the area who is hoping to bring home some hardware.

In addition to the Olympics, the idea of a turf field is causing excitement (and a stir) in town.

Who will build it? Who will use it? Where will it be? Will it be indoor or outdoor (or both)?

Chances are, a ton of people from Cochrane, Calgary, Rocky View County and elsewhere will use a turf field. Outdoor activity is what healthy development is all about.

Cochrane Minor Soccer recently announced it would focus on long-term development of its players.

The Cochrane Generals will be wrapping up their regular season Feb. 16, striving to make the playoffs.

Sports, sports and more sports.

Sports are a good thing.

Those who participate in sports are typically happier, healthier people. Kids who take part tend to avoid getting into trouble, make friends and become more a part of the community. Athletics touches people of all ages, boys, girls, men and women.

The more venues a community has for sporting events – like soccer, football and baseball fields, ice hockey rinks, basketball courts, etc.) the more people will visit, stay and eat in that community.

Cochrane is surrounded by excellent venues for a variety of sports. Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre can host all kinds of sporting events, there’s Rangers Field, the Old Arena, two golf courses, ski hills east and west and a potential turf field to tempt even more tournaments and training opportunities.

Cochrane should jump all over any and all opportunities to help its sports community flourish. It only leads to a more active and vibrant community.
