Small-town values evident in each Cochrane community

With summer finally upon us there are many more reasons for the residents of Cochrane to get out and meet, greet, chat and engage.

With summer finally upon us there are many more reasons for the residents of Cochrane to get out and meet, greet, chat and engage.

Whether you are attending a fundraising event, participating in a public forum, meeting your neighbours for a backyard barbecue or shopping locally, take the time to get out and meet your neighbours.

Having just moved into a new neighbourhood myself in Cochrane after living and working in the Glenbow area for 13 years, I am impressed! Our new neighbours have been so friendly, introducing themselves, walking our dogs while we are at work and generally welcoming us to the block. I’ve lived in East Cochrane, West Terrace and Glenbow, and the friendliness of Cochrane has been consistent for over 20 years. I have always had the best neighbours and I believe this is the norm throughout our town.

On a municipal note, earlier this winter I met with a resident in Rolling Range estates regarding the wetlands and development issues that concerned them. Although I couldn’t give them the answers they wanted, their warmth and friendliness was a true indication of how we maintain our “small town” feeling.

With regard to this same issue, the number of people who showed up at our last council meeting was fantastic. Seeing people wanting to be involved, wanting to educate and be educated and making the effort to be engaged is why I continue to live here and am excited to represent this community.

Small town to me isn’t about how many people live here, how high the buildings are or how many traffic lights we have. It’s about respecting our heritage, welcoming newcomers and communicating with each other with respect and honesty.

I invite everyone to enjoy Cochrane and all it has to offer. Think positive.

Consider possible solutions when you have a complaint. Be part of the discussion. Be responsible and continue to hold your council responsible for the right reasons. Make sure we are all considering the greater good of Cochrane today and into the future.
