Spring inspires active, healthy lifestyles

Well, it seems spring is upon us (just because I said that, it will likely snow next week), and for now everyone is out playing and enjoying some wonderful weather.

Well, it seems spring is upon us (just because I said that, it will likely snow next week), and for now everyone is out playing and enjoying some wonderful weather.

Physical literacy is so important to our wellbeing, especially for our kids, so make a special effort to turn off your cellphones and iPads and get out and enjoy the many kilometres of paths and parks that we have in our wonderful town.

Setting a great example for our children is not only healthy but will set them on the right path for their own healthy futures.

Cochrane was one of nine communities across Canada that received funding recently to support physical literacy.

Physical literacy is a new term, meaning the ability for children to experience as many fundamental movement skills as they grow — such as running, jumping, throwing, hopping and more — which prepare them for living a healthy, active lifestyle as adults.

PLAY Cochrane started last June as a pilot physical literacy project and was delivered at Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School and Holy Spirit Elementary School.

The schools, together with support from the town and Sport for Life Cochrane, generated some excellent steppingstones to an active community.

Introducing your children into a wide variety of activities over the course of their childhood contributes greatly to their future life as an active adult, not to mention the success they will experience in sports.

Kudos to the PLAY Cochrane team for their efforts in contributing to active, healthy lifestyles in Cochrane youth.

I encourage you and your family to stay active together, be healthy and enjoy our natural outdoor playground.
