Agricultural Round-up coming to Rocky View communities

The annual Agricultural Round-up is underway in Rocky View County, bringing recycling drop-off to the more remote areas.

The annual Agricultural Round-up is underway in Rocky View County (RVC), bringing recycling drop-off to the more remote areas.

The Round-ups are held on Wednesdays throughout the summer months. Three drop-offs have been held and five more will be held, ending Aug. 24. The drop-off at the Jumping Pound Community Hall will return this year.

Christian Yee, solid waste and recycling advisor for RVC, said the idea is to give rural residents a convenient way to recycle materials, including those that are unique to agricultural properties.

“These events, we go into those remote communities to collect these special materials such as the ag plastic green bags and twine, tires, barbed wire, and (hazardous waste) because we want people to dispose of those materials properly, and we find that people will do it if we provide a convenient way,” Yee said.

Materials collected at the Agricultural Round-up include:

Car batteries

Electronics

Fire extinguishers

Fluorescent light tubes

Green bags

Household hazardous waste

Paint

Used oil, motor

Oil filters

Empty oil containers

Pesticide containers

Propane tanks

Tires

Plastic baling

Unused herbicide chemicals

Barbed wire

Metal mesh

This will be the last year that pesticide containers will be collected. In the future, pesticide containers will be returned to retailers.

Last year, RVC collected 18 metric tonnes of tires, 11 metric tonnes of used oils, about half a metric tonne of corrosive liquid, four metric tonnes of paint, and nine-and-a-half tonnes of wire.

  • July 27 - Springbank (Westlife Church)

  • August 3 - Bottrel General Store

  • August 10 - Delacour Community Hall
