Cochrane's Parade of Lights could use a hand

Cochranites always seem to pull through for the community.

It's that time of year again when Christmas floats and lights take over Cochrane's Main Street. The spectacle may not take place though if the event can't attract more volunteers.

The second annual Parade of Lights is set for Saturday (Dec. 7) and promises to be an evening of holiday cheer for the whole family.

"I'm very excited, we had a lot of fun last year and we're looking forward to having a lot of fun again this year, said Stephenie Shelstad, chair of Cochrane Light Up and organizer of the Parade of Lights.

This year the event could use a little help from fellow Cochranites in order for the show to go on. Shelstad mentioned that they currently have three volunteers signed up to man the barricades but a total of 16 volunteers are required.

"We are pushing the cut off until probably Thursday night, Friday," explains Shelstad. "I'm really, really hoping, positive thoughts, that people will sign up today."

The event will not be possible if they are unable to close the street to have vehicles removed.

Shelstad added if anyone is interested in volunteering you can do so by emailing [email protected] or through the Facebook page where you can find a link to sign up. Shelstad says she will get back to those who reach out and - fingers crossed - they will get the remainder of the needed volunteers.

Nine festive floats will be cruising down Main Street and although Shelstad welcomes those still wanting to enter one, she is hoping to tackle the volunteer situation first.

Pre entertainment for the Parade of Lights begins at 5 p.m. with face painting and sparkle tattoos. The much loved polar bear from Light Up will be back as well as some Disney characters. The parade will then take over Historic Downtown at 6 p.m.

"There will be lots of lights and it will end with the big guy himself coming from the North Pole," laughed Shelstad.
