Keeping with the art theme swirling around Cochrane these last few weekends in September, the Chinook Film Group has returned and it’s bringing with it a documentary of dreams, hard work and artistry.

Titled 20 Feet From Stardom, the Morgan Neville-directed film captures the true story of the backup singers that grace the stage of some of the biggest musical stars of the 21st century.

The film follows the life of these backup singers, and features interviews and comments from entertainers such as Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Stevie Wonder.

The season will kick off at the Cochrane Movie House at 7 p.m. Sept. 25.

“We thought we’d start off the season with a film that will work for arts week,” said Murray Mitchell, spokesperson for the local film organization. “We wanted something arts related. This film shows the relationship between the big stars and their backup singers — they mean a lot to each other.”

The film group has some rough ideas planned for the upcoming season, said Mitchell. But with the Calgary International Film Festival running from Sept. 19-29, Mitchell said he was holding off on choosing showings until the film circuit wraps up. This year, Chinook Film Group will be showing their selections on the third Thursday of each month — with the exception for the upcoming showing Sept. 25.

Tickets for 20 Feet From Stardom can be purchased in advance at Java Jamboree or Video Experts, or at the door on the day of the showing. Tickets are $10.
