Springbank Heritage Club to host seniors' housing open house May 15

Residents can learn more about a senior housing complex planned for Springbank during a public open house at the Springbank Heritage Club May 15.

The facility is part of the controversial Bingham Crossing development that will be built in phases and include retail and office space along with the seniors’ facility.

Gail Hinchliffe, with United Active Living Inc., said this meeting will discuss priority registration for Springbank residents.

“We’ve had several meetings in the community and there’s been thankfully a lot of interest,” said Hinchliffe.

During a series of public hearings earlier this fall for the land redesignation for Bingham Crossing, people opposed to the seniors facility said they didn’t think seniors would want to live in a shopping area, citing concerns about noise.

Others had concerns about the price of the housing.

Those who were in favour of the seniors facility said they liked having the option to remain in Springbank when they are no longer well enough to care for themselves.

Hinchliffe said she has been hearing from people who want a spot in the building.

“We’re not opening it up right now to anyone but Springbank (residents),” she said.

The open house will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a presentation starting at 7 p.m.

Hinchliffe wouldn’t comment on starting prices for the housing. She said it will be market value but said an exact price won’t be determined until “way down the road.”

Construction on the facility will be timed to match the start of Bingham Crossing and will be done in two phases.

The first phase will include 90 one- and two-bedroom units in a care centre, which will provide assisted living and dementia care.

“We have an assortment of suites because with a lot of couples, one partner may need care while the other does not,” she explained.

The centre will have a dining room, library and theatre art studio.

Hinchliffe said there is also plans for a salt-water pool and spa area.

She said there will also be 53 independent units that will include kitchens.

“People there could be fully independent but want access to the main building.”

There will also be eight, one-storey villas for people who want independence but would like to be near amenities.
