BUTTERWORTH, John
January 30, 1927 - December 30, 2023
John Butterworth of Cochrane, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the age of 96 years.
John was born in Hoylake, Wirral, England and grew up living with his parents and sister in West Kirby, Wirral. John joined the army in 1945 and did his national service as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, he spent a lot of his military time in Egypt driving his Officer Commanding to various parts of the country.
John met his wife Jean in their teens and they were married in June 1950. They had three children, Peter, Robert and Barbara. After leaving the Army John did various jobs and eventually ended up working for a local electricity company where he reached the level of foreman. By the time he retired he had worked for the same company for over 40 years. At the time of his retirement John and Jean lived in West Kirby, Wirral and in 2001 they moved to Chelmsford, just outside London, and lived there until they followed Barbara and her family to Canada and permanently settled in Cochrane in 2010. When Jean became ill with Alzheimer’s they moved to Bethany Care in Cochrane. Jean sadly passed away in 2018 but John continued to live at Bethany where he became a much loved character for all who got to know him. John will be sadly missed by family, friends Bethany staff and residents.
John is survived by his sister Joan Harris, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Butterworth, daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Peter Sykes, grandchildren, Helen, Elizabeth and Charlotte and great-grandchildren, Lyra and Evan.
He is predeceased by his wife Jean Butterworth, son Peter Butterworth and great-grandson Lucas Butterworth.
Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Cochrane, 369 Railway Street, Cochrane, AB), on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
