Eagle rings in sixteen years, commitment to ethical journalism continues

Sixteen years ago, a newspaper took flight in Cochrane and set its philosophy as an information source dedicated to quality, compelling and objective journalism.

Sixteen years ago, a newspaper took flight in Cochrane and set its philosophy as an information source dedicated to quality, compelling and objective journalism.

Over the years, we at the Cochrane Eagle have stayed true to those tenets in an effort to maintain our reputation as this community’s newspaper of record.

In this modern information age, our efforts are doubly important as we endeavour to demonstrate the importance of print media, not only as a valuable member of the community, but as a trusted information source that cuts through the often times chaotic cacophony of newer mediums.

While we have incorporated a digital platform to complement our paper products, the Cochrane Eagle has been diligent in not succumbing to the better-first-than-right mentality that pervades online media sources. We also try to maintain the same quality online as we do in the newspaper.

A lot has changed in Cochrane over the past 16 years – perhaps most notably is its size. An increase of approximately 15,000 people the number of denizens of the community has more than doubled.

With that have come some growing pains ¬– congested traffic, a little more crime and more people using Cochrane as a bedroom community to the city.

While much tends to change with the passing of time, many things remain the same.

In 2001, the Cochrane Eagle’s first month of reporting featured stories on candidates tossing their hat in for the municipal election; athletes representing the province and the town at the Canada Games; plans to expand the recreation centre; and a survey to help improve community health and wellness.

Leafing back through our most recent coverage makes it apparent that perhaps at a base level Cochrane has not changed as much as some might think. Even if it has, one thing it has always strived to maintain is its community spirit.

One thing is for sure, this community has had and continues to have some incredible stories of success, inspiration and overall amazing people.

For the past 16 years, the Cochrane Eagle has done its very best to feature those incredible stories along side its award-winning coverage of local news and events.

Through it all, we have also prided ourselves in also being a member of this community and doing our utmost to be a reflection of what makes this town the best in Canada while also keeping people informed.

Thank you Cochrane for all your support, we look forward to serving you for many years to come.
