Cochrane has a lot going for it and not least among its attributes are our many sporting teams’ tremendous performances.
This past weekend, the Bow Valley Grizzlies rugby team rocketed to provincial glory with a dominating victory over the Edmonton Leprechaun Tigers. The win wasn’t only the first provincial title for the team, it was a rematch following a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Edmonton during last season’s provincial match up.
Bow Valley’s performance on the pitch this year has been nothing short of exemplary. Through the 12-game schedule the team recorded only two losses and put up massive numbers, scoring 643 points. The second closest team was the Calgary Hornets with 328 points.
The Grizzlies are truly a success story. After only six years in the league, the team has a provincial title under its belt and nearly did it in its fourth season.
Throughout the season, players and coaches have touted work ethic, grit and determination as the driving forces behind the Grizzlies’ success. Those traits were evident as the Grizzlies overcame a loss to the Calgary Saracens to end the regular season before cruising through the city championships and then the provincial title.
We congratulate the Grizzlies on their success and can’t wait to see what the future brings for the team.
Between Saturday and Thursday community groups in Cochrane were the beneficiaries of tens of thousands worth of funding.
On Saturday, the annual Outhouse Races and the Monumental Tournament of Aces raised money for four worthy causes.
More than $11,000 from the Outhouse Races, organized by Historic Downtown business The Heavenly Outhouse, will go to support the food bank.
The Monumental Tournament of Aces, organized by the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation and the Rotary Club of Cochrane, raised $83,000 to support Cochrane Search and Rescue, Rotary Club of Cochrane Student Exchange Program, and “Lindsay’s Kids” Sport sponsorships.
Today, The Bow RiversEdge Campground, owned by the Cochrane Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Cochrane, rounded out the giving splitting its $140,000 in profits between 19 local organizations.
This community has always been fortunate to have so many groups dedicated to supporting the initiatives that make this a great place to live.
